They will completely ignore my wife and I and head straight to my daughter any time she is in the room. Hi Medina and thanks for the comment. Reading to grandbabies is a great thing to do and I bet their parents will read to them too. I see some great minds developing in your family...

My husband and I opted out of NYS testing this year. I feel like these tests hurt a child's self esteem. Not everyone excels at math and reading - and that doesn't mean you don't have skills. It is torture for kids who struggle in school. As a mom it breaks my heart.

In reply to <a href="https://www.graywolfproductions.com/parenting201/puppies-and-young-children#comments/133">Susie</a>.

Thank you for the comment Susie. My old woof died 2 years ago and it took me a while to think of getting another dog. There are advantages to not having one, but I am one who just needs dogs and cats around...in spite of the time/energy commitment of a puppy.. and it had over 20 years since I had a puppy as my last dog was about 3 when I adopted him.

Get a puppy :)

Awww this is so sweet. We have been an empty nester for several years and I have been begging my husband for a puppy. We lost our family dog of 17 years right before the kids left home.

Your article makes me want one. Maybe if I hold up one of those Facebook signs that says "If I get 1,000 likes my husband will let me get a puppy," he might give in. :)

The real tragedy in standardized testing in general is that so many people internalize those results, allowing them to define an entire life and self-worth. It will be good when school systems move to a more inclusive system that allows true ability to be identified.

In reply to <a href="https://www.graywolfproductions.com/parenting201/iq-tests-and-testing-are-myths#comments/128">Mercedes</a>.

Thank you for the comment. Although I have given thousands of IQ tests, I couch my reports in very careful words so that I don't give major credence to the score but rather to the parts of it - which offer much more information.

It's a major reason I hate NCLB - when you make everything contingent on test scores, teachers teach only to the test and they do not teach the students how to think.

As a former elementary teacher, I hate standardized tests! There are so many more meaningful ways to evaluate progress and knowledge, but our school system is just not built to support them. I hated seeing so many creative students not accepted into the "gifted" program because hey did not have a certain test score. Thanks for sharing this info! Found you via ultimate blog challenge.

Thank you for your comment - it is hard to make this "celebration" decision but ultimately we all have to do what we think best for our kids [and our wallets.] I tend to go with what the "gut" says :-)

Glad you enjoyed the series
