  • Have Laptop; Can Travel [and Earn Income]

I have a laptop. I got the laptop so that I can take it anywhere with me and work from anywhere. That is a lifestyle that is kind of fun. As long as I can get an Internet connection, I can do what I do which is right create courses and sell things. All I need is a connection and that is easier to get in most places these days.

Today’s post is about having a lifestyle that allows one to work from anywhere. I am more or less develop that lifestyle a long time ago and even in the days before laptops. Even now with the laptop because I like where I live I often take it up onto one upper deck and sit out in the sun or take it to a coffee shop or take it to a different room in my house depending on where I feel like sitting.

I also have an iPhone and an iPad. In total the three of them would basically allowed me to go anywhere that I have a connection and continued to work. Continue to earn money. Continue to have fun.

Today’s post was supposed to be imagining where I would like to beat to have this kind of lifestyle and it was suggested that Portugal was a nice place. I’ve never been there and it’s on my list of places to get to. But instead of me picking the place to go my ideal in terms of traveling and working is to have someone else pay for it. That’s why am working on the aging project. In my mind, I will be the go-to person in terms of speaking and teaching about the aging process from the point of view of someone who is actually there. Then I will be able to be invited to universities, talks, symposia, etc. And the interesting places in the world. Then someone else will pay me to travel put me up in a nice hotel and offer me an honorarium or a speaking fee.

I actually spent a lot of my earlier life doing this kind of thing and I would like to do it again. I worked on government contracts and projects. I taught and was invited to be the keynote speaker for different organizations, and I presented research at professioanl meetings around the country. It was nice to be able to do all of that traveling basically for free. I did reach a point where I got tired of always getting on an airplane but I think I’m ready to do that again.

  • 30 Days Of Video

    film reels

Today is the 30th day of June and I promised myself that I would create a video a day through June. So today I did my 30th video and here are some things I learned….

I learned that I can work through heat waves. [Which is good because it seems they’re never ending this summer.]

I learned that I can have myself be a talking head by using ScreenFlow.

I learned a lot more about ScreenFlow so that I am now comfortable using it Learning more about it. Because once I have learned more about this version, I will treat myself to the newest update which is not free. That assumes by the time I learn the ins and outs of ScreenFlow I will have made all that extra money. It’s not that expensive – but I have other things I need to buy first

I learned a lot more about Keynote, which is the basis for many of my videos.

I learned to work through procrastination. Mixed with the heat waves this was not a good combination and I found myself finishing up my habit building tasks at 11 o’clock at night sometimes but I did them and that is what counts.

  • Why Having A Job May Not Help Your Retirement

    at my job

We used to think that staying in or at a job for years until we reached “retirement” age or about 65 was the way to live. Many stayed with jobs that did not exactly love, but the job provided security in the form of paying into Social Security, and sometimes a company pension plan.

And as we aged in that job, we figured these “perks” wold carry us into retirement and into our golden years of older ages.

Not so – according to recent research!

Almost a third of workers (28%) say they have less than $1,000 in savings and investments that could be used for retirement, not counting their primary residence or defined benefits plans such as traditional pensions. And 57% say they have less than $25,000, according to a telephone survey of 1,003 workers and 1,001 retirees from the non-profit Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) and Greenwald and Associates. Previous surveys from EBRI and other groups have shown similar savings rates.

Not having enough saved away at present may lead you think you’ll just keep working at that job.

But will that job still want you?
Or will it want a younger less expensive employee?

Or, if you are young enough, you may think “well there’s lots of years left until I retire I’ll just start saving in a few years.”  But you probably won’t – you won’t save then because you’re not saving now. We have debts we have bills we have other things that we use our money for and we tend to not think about retirement when we’re young.

As I have suggested before, a better way to plan for your future whether you’re working at a job now is to find some form of self employment.  For starters, being self-employed is good for tax savings. I’m one who does not mind paying my federal and state income taxes. But I also do not like paying more than I have to.  At least in the United  at least in the US,States, the tax code favors the self-employed. There are many more deductions, legitimate deductions, for people who are self-employed then there are for people who work for others.

What kind of self-employment is good for YOU? Possible for YOU?
That will be covered in the next post……

    stay tuned

  • Aging, Self Employment, and You!

The economy is improving [slightly] but I’ll bet older people are not the ones who are getting hired or getting the “good” jobs. And even with increases in the minimum wage, jobs are not being created that pay much more than that minimum wage.

Older people with experience are seen as requiring higher pay levels. It’s better for the bottom line to hire young people for lower pay.

Then there is the office mentality [it’s a well kept secret] of not hiring people smarter or more capable than you
because they might be out to “get” your job.

People who are not seen as threats are safer hires.

In short: The job market isn’t going to look good for older workers for a long while – if ever. And if you rely on Social Security – it’s not going to increase by anything more than a small percent each year.

I therefore put this question out there for you:

If you want to increase your income [and most do] why not be your own boss?

    Stop job hunting!

For many, job hunting is a debilitating experience. You apply for many jobs and do not even get a courtesy reply of “sorry.” You don’t even get an acknowledgement that your resume has been received. In fact, you never hear anything from the places you apply to.

And if you do manage to get a live interview, you may still never hear from them again. Interviews are done for many reasons, and, in my opinion, not all of them ethical reasons.

What can you do to earn money?

     Become your own boss!

    Become an entrepreneur!

Do what you always wanted to do!

Turn your long time dreams into reality!

There is much to say about being self employed or becoming an entrepreneur that I’ll post on the topic over the next few weeks.

    Stay tuned to this site!
