{"id":392,"date":"2010-01-06T08:30:48","date_gmt":"2010-01-06T16:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.graywolfproductions.com\/parenting201\/?p=392"},"modified":"2012-01-03T12:38:21","modified_gmt":"2012-01-03T20:38:21","slug":"what-is-a-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.graywolfproductions.com\/parenting201\/what-is-a-child","title":{"rendered":"What IS a child?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">That may sound like an oddball question but we need to ask it.&nbsp; Are children just smaller versions of adults?&nbsp; Are children just good imitators of the &quot;adult-ness&quot; around them?<\/p>\n<p>Many years ago the above two questions would get a resounding &quot;yes&quot; or a strong &quot;maybe.&quot;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Next time you are at a museum look at the old masters paintings of families &#8211; the children are dressed in adult-like clothing and their proportions are adult-like.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4514\/861\/1600\/nath baby1.jpg\" onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"left\" alt=\"newborn baby\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"2\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/4514\/861\/200\/nath baby1.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Newborn baby &#8211; note the large head!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Did the early artists &quot;see&quot; a small head when painting &#8211; or was it such a prevalent attitude that the artist intentionally &quot;missed&quot; the actual size of the child&#39;s head and body in order to appease the family paying for the painting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><br \/>\nChildren being seen as something almost entirely different from adults was not a viable notion until the early part of the 1900&#39;s &#8211; not that long ago.&nbsp; Yet there are persons today who think children have no ideas of their own and are molded solely by what their parents do to and for them. <\/p>\n<p>Children are different.&nbsp; Yes they are the same species as the adults who raise them &#8211; but how they function;&nbsp; how they learn, think, and talk follows that child&#39;s path of development.&nbsp; And it&#39;s not an adult path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The way you &quot;see&quot; children affects how you raise them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">There is more about this and other aspects of child development and parenting in my e-book:<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.graywolfproductions.com\/parenting201\/you-can-totally-screw-up-as-a-mom-and-still-raise-great-kids\"> You Can Totally Screw Up As A Mom And Still Raise Great Kids<\/a>.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That may sound like an oddball question but we need to ask it.&nbsp; Are children just smaller versions of adults?&nbsp; Are children just good imitators of the &quot;adult-ness&quot; around them?
