The Original Mother’s Day Proclamation<\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

 <\/p>\n

I post this poem every year [on one of my blogs] but my commentary differs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We are so far away from the original thoughts of Julia Ward Howe that we no longer think of the day as more than one on which to take mom to dinner, make dinner for mom and of course send a card and flowers.<\/span>
\n\t<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And we have made Mother's Day into yet another day to promote shopping and buying.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I doubt any of the Mother's Day shoppers even know how this day came to be or that it started as an anti war poem!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\tTake time today to reflect about what Julia Ward Howe wrote.<\/span>

Mother's Day Proclamation [1870]<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Arise then…women of this day!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Arise, all women who have hearts!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n\t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Say firmly:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

"We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For caresses and applause.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We, the women of one country,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Will be too tender of those of another country<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Our own. It says: "Disarm! Disarm!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Blood does not wipe our dishonor,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Nor violence indicate possession.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At the summons of war,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Let women now leave all that may be left of home<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For a great and earnest day of counsel.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Whereby the great human family can live in peace…<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But of God –<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

That a general congress of women without limit of nationality,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And the earliest period consistent with its objects,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The amicable settlement of international questions,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The great and general interests of peace.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
