This information is from the law school I went to. You come out knowing how to practice law because you actually handle real cases while in the clinics. The photo above is from a trial advocacy class. We used a courtroom in the Federal Courthouse and had a sitting judge "rule" in our case! You do lose your fear of courtrooms and learn that judges do like students! I worked as a GAL [Guardian Ad Litem] representing children in the D.C. Abuse\/Neglect system after working at a major union's headquarters. My classmates became public defenders, public prosecutors, federal employees, private practitioners or into other legal arenas. Clarke School of Law (UDC-DCSL) <\/span><\/font>www.law.udc.edu<\/a>,<\/span><\/font> is offering up to 20 full-tuition Advocate for Justice (AFJ) Scholarships each year to future public interest lawyers. Our goal is to allow committed activists to graduate from law school with minimal debt – free to choose a career path based on their values. <\/span><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Applicants for the AFJ Scholarship are evaluated holistically based equally on academic talent and their proven commitment as advocates for justice and public service. We encourage applicants of all ages and experience levels, from recent graduates who feel that their track record reveals a deep commitment to the social good, to individuals seeking to embark on a second or third career who have demonstrated their commitment to justice over decades. Those who meet these requirements and are District of Columbia residents, people of color, or from groups under-represented in the legal profession are particularly encouraged to apply. <\/span><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The School of Law 's definition of social good is a broad one and includes environmental activists, anti-poverty workers, inner-city school teachers, civil libertarians, labor organizers, political activists, and more. While the School is often described as "progressive," activists with conservative leanings and agendas are also strongly encouraged to apply. <\/span><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Here are a few key points:<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The UDC-DCSL program is the most hands-on law program in America , requiring all students to provide a minimum of 700 hours of clinical service to low-income people and\/or the public interest in professor-supervised legal clinics. It has been rated among the top ten clinical programs in America .
