The original mother’s day sentiment was put forth in an anti-war poem by Julia Ward Howe.<\/span><\/h1>\n

I doubt many modern day Mother’s Day shoppers even know how this day came to be – so please t<\/span>ake time this weekend to reflect on the original thought.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Arise then…women of this day!<\/span><\/p>\n

Arise, all women who have hearts!<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!<\/span><\/p>\n

Say firmly:<\/span><\/p>\n

“We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,<\/span><\/p>\n

Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,<\/span><\/p>\n

For caresses and applause.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn<\/span><\/p>\n

All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.<\/span><\/p>\n

We, the women of one country,<\/span><\/p>\n

Will be too tender of those of another country<\/span><\/p>\n

To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”<\/span><\/p>\n

From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with<\/span><\/p>\n

Our own. It says: “Disarm! Disarm!<\/span><\/p>\n

The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Blood does not wipe our dishonor,<\/span><\/p>\n

Nor violence indicate possession.<\/span><\/p>\n

As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil<\/span><\/p>\n

At the summons of war,<\/span><\/p>\n

Let women now leave all that may be left of home<\/span><\/p>\n

For a great and earnest day of counsel.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means<\/span><\/p>\n

Whereby the great human family can live in peace…<\/span><\/p>\n

Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,<\/span><\/p>\n

But of God –<\/span><\/p>\n

In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask<\/span><\/p>\n

That a general congress of women without limit of nationality,<\/span><\/p>\n

May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient<\/span><\/p>\n

And the earliest period consistent with its objects,<\/span><\/p>\n

To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,<\/span><\/p>\n

The amicable settlement of international questions,<\/span><\/p>\n

The great and general interests of peace.<\/span><\/p>\n
